Directorate Of University Health Services

The Kenyatta University Health Centre (KUHC) is located along Mali Road between the University Chapel, the Gymnasium and the University Motor Yard in the Main Campus, Kenyatta University. There are 6 satellite clinics established in various Kenyatta University Campuses including Mombasa, Kitui, Embu, Ruiru, Parklands and City.

SERVICE DELIVERY

The KUHC primarily provides health services to Kenyatta University staff and students.

It is composed of the following sub-units: The Outpatient Clinic, the Sick Bay and Ghana Complex Clinics consisting of Reproductive Health Clinic (Ghana 2), HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing and Treatment Centre (Ghana 4), Consultants Clinics (Ghana 6) and the Dental Unit (Ghana 8). The outpatient clinic is composed of the reception, consulting rooms, the pharmacy, laboratory, and physiotherapy unit.

Sick Bay has a capacity of 18 beds divided into Male wing consisting of 8 beds Male Wing and 10 beds Female Wing. This provides observation and treatment facilities for the more ill patients requiring inpatient care.

The KUHC outpatient clinic and sickbay are open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The Ghana Complex Clinics provide a wide array of auxiliary and specialized health services. The Reproductive Health Clinic (Ghana 2) provides antenatal and postnatal health services to students and staff including breast and cervical cancer screening and contraceptive services. The HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing and Treatment Centre (Ghana 4) conducts HIV testing and initiates treatment and follow-up for HIV infected persons, The Consultants Clinics (Ghana 6) is a specialist referral clinic that operates an appointment schedule for 5 specialist doctors targeting patients with complex conditions in the fields of internal medicine, gynaecology, ear, nose and throat surgery, paediatrics and psychiatry. The Dental Unit (Ghana 8) performs dental and oral health procedures and follow-up.

The KUHC has a fleet of two ambulances used for emergency response and transfers to secondary facilities as per need.

HEALTH WORKFORCE:

The KUHC is staffed by the following cadres of staff. Medical Officers numbering 4 and 15 clinical officers, who provide routine medical consultation. The pharmacy is staffed by 1 pharmacists and 11 pharmaceutical technologists. The laboratory is staffed by 15 laboratory technologists. The nursing cadre consists of 23 nurses. The physiotherapy unit consists of 2 trained staff. There a 4 specialist doctors providing consultancy services at the health unit i.e.1 Paediatrician, 1 Psychiatrist, 1 ear, nose and throat surgeon and 1 Gynaecologist

HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

The KUHC operates a paperless electronic medical records system software called E-Hospital. Each patient obtains a unique identifier code at reception which creates an electronic file for the patient. The doctors’ notes, laboratory test requests and results and prescriptions are also saved into the patient file within this system. Queries of periodic workload and performance of the health unit staff and clinics can also be queried from the system to generate reports.

MEDICINES, VACCINES AND HEALTH PRODUCTS

The KUHC procures medicines and laboratory supplies through a competitive tendering process that is open to all pharmaceutical companies. Kenya expanded program of immunization (KEPI) childhood vaccines are obtained from the Ministry of Health through the sub-county health office.

FINANCING

The KUHC operations including the purchase of medicines and laboratory supplies financed wholly by the University. Health workers are employed and remunerated as per the university service scheme.

LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE

The KUHC is headed by a Director, appointed by the Vice-chancellor. He is assisted by three heads of sections i.e. Heads of clinical services, nursing services, and pharmacy services.

Oversight of health service provision and policy direction is done by a University Health Services Board appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The current Board Chair is Prof. Ephantus Kabiru.
